Getting ready for a professional photo session can feel a little overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you’ve booked a family photoshoot, an engagement session, a maternity shoot, or a personal branding session, a little preparation goes a long way toward making sure your images look polished, relaxed, and true to you.
Here are five simple, practical tips that will help you get the best results and enjoy the experience too!
1. Plan Your Outfits in Advance
What you wear makes a big impact on how your photos turn out. Here are some things to keep in mind:
Stick to solid colors and neutral tones. Bright patterns or logos can distract from your face and the emotion of the photo. Earth tones, pastels, or muted colours work beautifully for family or couple shoots. Consider the location with your photographer. A beach shoot may call for soft whites or blues; an urban shoot might suit bolder tones. Bring a backup outfit for longer shoots. If we have time for outfit changes, variety adds dimension to your gallery.
Don’t forget shoes and accessories! These little details can elevate your whole look.
Tip: Try your outfit on beforehand, and take a few selfies in natural light to see how everything photographs.
2. Get a Good Night’s Sleep!
It may sound obvious, but sleep makes a huge difference. Well-rested eyes, fresh skin, and an overall sense of calm help you look (and feel) your best in front of the camera, especially if you feel a bit shy when taking photos.
Avoid late nights and try to hydrate the day before your session. For early shoots, set out everything the night before so you’re not rushed in the morning. Feeling relaxed and rested helps capture those genuine smiles and natural expressions that make a photo shine.
3. Think About the Mood You Want to Capture
Pinterest board! Pinterest Board! Pinterest board... Did I say that enough? Pinterest boards are so good to help clarify the look and feel you want for your photoshoot! Are you hoping for something romantic, editorial, playful, or classic? The more clarity you have on the vibe you're after, the easier it is for me to bring that vision to life through posing, lighting, and editing style. Send me your Pinterest board and I will be able to memorise those key shots you'd love to recreate!
Ask yourself when booking the shoot:
- What will you use the photos for?
- What emotions do you want to convey?
- Is there a color scheme, theme, or setting you love?
Feel free to send inspiration photos, Pinterest boards, or even just a quick voice note with your ideas. This collaboration helps us both walk into the session with a clear, shared goal.
4. Always prepare for a change of weather!
When it comes to outdoor photography, weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean your session is ruined. In fact, some of the most beautiful and dramatic photos are taken under unexpected skies.
What if the weather turns extreme?
If conditions are truly unsafe or would ruin the session (like thunderstorms or high winds), I’ll always offer a reschedule. Your safety and the quality of your photos come first.
Don’t fear the weather—embrace it. Sometimes, a change in skies leads to unexpected beauty. And I’ll be there to capture it.
5. Relax and Trust the Process
Above all else, know that you don’t need to be a model to get amazing photos. Most of my clients aren't used to being in front of the camera—but you'd never know it!
I'll guide you through:
- Posing that feels natural (and looks flattering)
- Movement prompts to keep things fun and candid
- Adjusting angles and lighting so you don’t have to worry about technical stuff
The best photos happen when you let go of perfection and just enjoy the moment. Laugh, move, play, and connect, I’ll be there capturing the magic in between.
In summary: Have FUN!
A successful photoshoot isn’t just about perfect lighting or expensive gear, it’s about connection, preparation, and trust. With just a little prep and the right mindset, your shoot can be a stress-free, confidence-boosting experience that results in images you’ll love for years.
